Weekend Recap

It's so nice outside today! It's supposed to be up to 70*. The great news is that Miss Kylie is finally feeling better and is back to school today! It's great to see her so full of energy again. She missed a lot of school the past two weeks.
Lindsey was a candidate for Courtwarming Princess. Here's a picture of her at the assembly last Wednesday.
Tyler happened to stop by as I was getting ready to go to the assembly, so he joined me and surprised Lindsey!
Here's a picture of Lindsey with her letterman jacket.
And a more close-up shot.
This was at half-time at the Courtwarming game on Friday night.  Todd went to the game and I stayed home with Miss Kylie, who was still sick at the time.
Here are Lien and Lindsey.

Lindsey and her friend, Neita.
Lindsey sent me a text from the dance that she won as Courtwarming Princess!  I don't have any pictures of that because the crowning was during the dance, and parents weren't invited.  Yay, Lindsey!

Another bit of good news is that Natalie made the Dean's List for her first semester of college!  Woo-hoo!

I helped in the nursery Sunday morning at church. The 7 or 8 month old little cutie-bug I was holding had just finished a bottle and started to get fussy. She didn't seem like she needed to burp, just that she was a little aggravated. I said, "Sweetie, what do you want?" Out of the blue she signed 'more'. I asked Kylie, "Did she just sign 'more'??" So I said, "What do you want?" Once again, she signed 'more'. Kylie and I just looked at each other and laughed, and I proceeded to get the little cutie some water in her bottle because she was out of milk. She did NOT want water, she wanted 'more' milk, so she kept looking at me like, "Come on, lady, can't you understand me??" When her mom picked her up I asked, "Does your baby use sign language?" She said, "Oh yes, we do that with her all the time." I told her what happened and she just had to laugh that I had to give her water because she was out of milk and wanted 'more' milk!! I love babies! They are so smart!

Yesterday afternoon I delivered a couple of meals to friends.  My friend from work, Janet, was very ill in November and had surgery this morning to have the finger tips of 4 of her fingers on her right hand removed.  She has more surgery to come on the other hand, which has more extensive damage.  We have been taking meals to her family, but I had made a batch of Ham and Beans and cornbread on Friday.  My family doesn't like Ham and Beans, so I always give away the extra after I get a bowl.  I took some of the Ham and Beans to Janet and her hubby, and some more of it to my friend, Narin, whose mom is in the hospital.  Narin has been up at the hospital a LOT, and when she saw on Facebook that I had made Ham and Beans and had extra, she requested some!  I love being able to share.

Gotta scoot and get back to my housework!  Have a great week!

Tuesday Evening

My Saturday photo shoot went very well!  Here's a picture I took while testing the light at the Liberty Memorial.  The weather could NOT have been better.  It was 60* and the sky was beautiful!  I'm almost finished editing and am very pleased with the pictures.  The family had a lot of fun at the shoot, and that's always a goal of mine, as well.  This family hadn't had family pictures since 1993, and we got some great ones!
Here is a picture of a field of poppies inside the Liberty Memorial, reminiscent of Flanders Field. Very pretty!

Poor Miss Kylie is still sick.  She had a virus last week, began to feel better and then got to feeling bad again.  Her virus turned into a sinus infection.  She got an antibiotic from the pediatrician this afternoon and will hopefully be on the mend soon.  She is so tired of being sick AND of missing school. She missed basketball practice and her game last week, too, which made her very sad. She is also having hormonal issues as her little body prepares for that lovely cycle we girls all get to deal with.  Ugh!

Sunday, Lindsey and I got up bright and early to head to a volleyball tournament at KU.  Another girl from the team rode with us, as did Lindsey's boyfriend, Lien. Her team did really poorly.  I feel bad because Lindsey works her hiney off, but some of the girls on the team just don't get into it at all.  It's so frustrating! I wish we could afford to put her on one of the better club teams, but it's just not in the budget. I saw at least one college scout at the tourney, but I'm not sure from which college.  She was watching and taking notes, though. One nice thing about being at KU was that we got to see Leah, as she goes to school there.  After the tourney, she gave us a tour of her dorm.  Now we can picture what she's talking about when she tells us what is going on at school.  Here's a picture of Leah, Lindsey, and Lien in front of Leah's dorm. By the way, Sunday had a high of 25* after the 60* the day before.  Brrr!!

Well, I'm gonna get off of here for now.  Hope you have had a great start to your week!

Friday Evening

Getting ready for a photo shoot in downtown KC tomorrow, so I took a little drive this morning to see the best location to get some good shots.  The daughter of this family teaches at Kylie's school, and she gave this photo shoot as a Christmas/Retirement gift to her mother.  It will be her parents, her brother, and her.  They want to include Union Station, the Liberty WWI Memorial, and this Western Auto sign.  The weather is supposed to be just perfect tomorrow: sunny and 54* with very little wind.  Wahoo!

Poor little Kylie has been sick for several days.  She's really hoping she'll feel like playing basketball tomorrow, but I sure don't see that happening unless things change drastically between now and then.  Larissa has had a nagging cough that is driving her crazy, especially when she tries to sleep at night.  Tyler said he feels achy and has a sore throat.  It's that time of year, I guess.  Poor things!

Lindsey found out she is a Courtwarming candidate!  How exciting!  She found a dress to borrow, because there is zero extra money in the account for that.  This has been an expensive month with college expenses, dental expenses, fees for classes for high school, etc.  Doesn't sound like much, but, man, it adds up quickly!  Anyhow, I'll find out more info about Courtwarming and I'm sure you can expect lots of pictures! :)

Sunday Lindsey has another volleyball tournament.  This one is at the college where our friend, Leah, attends, so we'll get to visit with her for a while!  I'm going to bring a seat cushion this week because my hiney was SO tired of sitting on uncomfortable bleachers for hours and hours last week!  Todd is playing in the Worship Band at church on Sunday, so he and Kylie will go there.  Lindsey, her team-mate Abbey, her boyfriend Lien, and I will be leaving around 6:15AM to head for her tournament.  Ugh!  It's a long day, but I'm very very thankful to get to be there for these games like this.  It's a huge blessing to get to do that.

Speaking of Lindsey's boyfriend, Lien, please be in prayer for his family.  His dad had a heart attack about 6 months ago.  Lien and his brother were born in Italy, but moved here when they were 9 years old, about 7 years ago.  (It's amazing because Lien can speak Italian, Spanish, and English fluently.  It's cute when he talks to his mom on the phone, because he speaks Spanish with an Italian accent.  It sounds like "Ma ma', ma ma'" with the emphasis on the second syllable each time.)  His mom teaches Italian at one of the colleges here in town.  His dad had run a cleaning business before his heart attack.  Lien's dad did not have health insurance and they weren't able to afford good care for him here, but he has a nephew who is a doctor in Argentina.  A little before Christmas, Lien's dad flew to Argentina where his mother and siblings live, to receive some health care.  They found out this week that it is unlikely that his health will improve.  I don't know the details, but that is what I've heard through Lien.  Please be praying for Lien's family as they decide what to do.  In May, after school gets out, Lien and his mom and twin brother will be flying to Argentina for about a month.  I think the dad will be coming back when they return.  His mom is very upset about it all, needless to say.  I know that they would appreciate your prayers.  I can't imagine having to be away from my husband for 6 months while he had all of these health issues going on.  But she had to be here to keep her job and take care of their 16 year old sons who couldn't just be pulled out of school.  It's a tough place for their family.

Hope you have a great weekend!

Wednesday Evening!

Can you believe I'm writing this many days in a row??  I know...crazy, huh?

Larissa had a dentist appointment this afternoon.  She had her teeth cleaned and is all cleared for healthy teeth and gums for another 6 months.  Next up is Lindsey in a couple of weeks for her check-up and teeth cleaning, then Kylie, then Tyler.  We have found a new dentist I really really like! Larissa even said how much she liked her, too.

Talked with Natalie this afternoon and her day today was much better than yesterday.  Yippee!  Thanks for praying, and please keep it up!

Miss Kylie isn't feeling well tonight. I ended up coming home early from work because Todd had to go to Praise Band practice for church and Kylie was afraid she was going to throw up.  Praying it's just a passing thing and that she'll be feeling better tomorrow.

Hope your week is going well!

Oh, to be a dog!

I took this picture and sent it to Lindsey right before I went to work this morning.  It said, "This is what Rue does all day while you are at school."  You see, this is Lindsey's bed.  Rue likes to go between Lindsey's bed, Kylie's bed, and our bed and take naps all day while the girls are at school.  I think she misses her girlies when they are gone!  Lindsey texted back and said, "Awwwwwww! But that's why there's mud on my bed every day!!"  Could be, my dear!  And that's why I keep an old sheet over our quilt on our bed.  That way if Miss Pup gets up there with dirty paws, I don't have to worry.

I was so excited this morning because this was the day to pick up Lindsey's letterman jacket!!  It turned out so nice!  We are still waiting for 2 specialty patches for the back, one for District Champs for her team for soccer last spring and one for Lindsey making the First Team All-Conference in Volleyball this past fall.  I'll be sure to get a picture of Lindsey in her new jacket when we get a chance.  Todd and I were just so excited to be able to get that for her for Christmas.  In a large family, there aren't many big and special gifts that the kids get, so that makes these kinds of gifts even that much more special.

Time to put Miss Kylie to bed, so I'll scoot for now.  Please be praying for Natalie as she gets settled in this semester.  Also, be praying for Larissa as she gets this very last semester of high school under her belt. She can hardly WAIT for it to be done and over with, but she has to pass every single class this semester.  Please pray for the stick-to-it-iveness to get that done.  I know she can do it!!

Monday Afternoon

Wow, Volleyball tournaments wear me out...and I'm not even the one playing. I think it's just the sitting on bleachers for 7 hours that does it to me. I'm so glad to be there to watch our daughter and cheer her on, but I'm so tired the next day, you'd think I'd just done some extreme activity of one kind or another. (Wimpy, huh??) Here are some pics from the tourney yesterday. I think they wound up in 4th Place, but I'm not really sure. The last picture is of a girl we ran into who used to be on the same club soccer team as Lindsey when she was in 5th - 8th grades. It was great to see Libby and her parents and sister. This was the era when Lindsey was known as Boomer on the soccer field, because there was another Lindsey on the team and that was the nick name her coach gave her.  It's funny when we see people from that time and they don't recognize her until she says, "It's Boomer!", then a light goes on!  Lindsey is in the red and is #15 in these pictures.
Blocking a shot at the net.

This picture is blurry, but I like how it shows what a great job she does diving for a ball and popping it up to keep it in play.

'Boomer' and Libby, her old soccer team-mate.
Natalie made it back down to college yesterday.  She started her new classes this morning.  She really loves the school down there, but wishes it was closer to home.  She never dreamed she'd get this homesick.  (I think it has a bit to do with a certain boy here in KC!)

Lindsey started soccer conditioning this afternoon after school.  The actual season doesn't begin until March, though.  She'll have conditioning on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays until practices begin.  She also has evening practice for her club volleyball team on Sunday and Thursday nights. Kylie has basketball practice on Wednesday evenings when I'm at work and Todd has practice for Praise Team at church (he plays the guitar), so Lindsey takes Kylie to her Wednesday evening basketball practices.  Kylie's games are always on Saturday mornings.  Basketball ends the second week in February.  Life is busy and my house is messy.  In fact, I'm getting ready to take my Christmas tree down as soon as I get this updated.  Yes, I know it's January 14th.  Actually, I didn't know it was the 14th...I just had to ask Lindsey!  :o)  I'm already behind on sending out birthday cards.  Man, that is so frustrating!  I used to be the queen of remembering to send birthday cards.  It's not that I have forgotten, I just don't get them sent in time, then when is it too late to send them afterward??  Ugh...I hate being a procrastinator like that!!

Well I need to go switch over the laundry and get supper started.  Hope you have a great week!

Saturday Evening Stuff

Miss Lindsey got her hair cut!  It looks so cute.  She hasn't had bangs since about 5th Grade, I do believe.  And she actually LIKES this picture and allowed me to post it!  WOW!

Natalie heads back to Baylor tomorrow.  Boo-hoo!!  But, we've had her home since December 8th, so I won't complain and I'll try not to cry! Yesterday she went with me up to Kylie's school to have lunch with her.  Here is Natalie with Kylie's friend, Evie, and Kylie. Natalie couldn't believe how tiny the lunchroom seemed.  She said she's sure it was MUCH larger when she went to school there.  :)

Well, I need to run to the store and get some food for the Volleyball Tournament tomorrow.  It's at William Jewell College, and we've been told that there's no concession stand.  These things usually last about 7 or 8 hours, so we are gonna need some food! By the way, Lindsey has to be there by...7:30 AM.  Looks like it's gonna be an early morning and a LONGGGGG day!  Hope you have a great weekend.  Stay safe!

Wednesday Morning

We had started a monthly Girls' Night Out with some friends back in November, but it has turned into a Girls + Some of the Hubbies + Some of the Kids Night Out. Two of the college kiddos were home for this one, so Sami and Natalie had fun visiting with each other, and all of us old people! Sami's brother, Levi, was sick so we didn't get to see him or his daddy. The photographer in me has to say that many of the pics I've been posting lately are with my phone camera, so that's why they're a bit 'eh'.  I love that I have it there to capture the moment, though, because that's what really matters!

Last night I sent an e-mail to the principal at Kylie's school, with a carbon copy to the Buildings and Grounds person and the Superintendent. The water at the school comes out an orangish-brownish color, and even when they let it run for a while, it has little pieces of rust.  I just wanted to bring it to their attention because I wasn't sure that they knew.  I got back a really nice e-mail that they will look into it. Earlier in the year, Kylie's teacher had asked that the kids bring water bottles to school because she was concerned about the orangish-brownish water. It was especially noticeable yesterday after the long Winter Break. The school is 40 years old, and I just want to make sure that is is 'old pipes' and not a break in the pipes letting in bacteria.

Gotta scoot and get more done around here. Hope you are having a great week so far!

Sunday Evening, Again!

Kylie's new hair cut!  She had 7" taken off!
Brrr! I know that today was warmer than it has been lately, but 33* is just NOT all that warm.  I'm more of a 60* to 65* girl!

Happy birthday to my friend, Terri, today! We've been friends since 2nd grade in 1974, so that makes us....um....old!

We had to be at church earlier than usual this morning because Kylie is now putting together the Power Points and videos for Miss Sharon for KidsQuest.  This was her first official day, so we wanted to make sure it was all going smoothly.  (It did, so hooray!) We grabbed a quick and cheap gluten-free meal at Wendy's (chili and a baked potato), then took Kylie over to play at her friend, Morgan's, house.  I've sat around and read all afternoon, which was wonderful!  Don't be shocked, but last night I even soaked in a nice hot bath.  Wow, now THAT'S a luxury!

The kids go back to school on Tuesday.  They have had a nice, long Christmas Break.  Seems like I remember that we always had to go back to school on January 2nd when I was a kid.  They have definitely enjoyed having lots of days to sleep late! By the way, Natalie doesn't go back until January 13th, so she even has a bit longer to enjoy the whole 'sleeping in' thing!

I've been having lots of people ask me about wedding pictures lately.  That, plus the fact that I was totally ticked off to hear the HUGE amount someone had been asked to pay for wedding pictures that turned out to be no better than the ones I take, and I've about decided it's time to make the jump and purchase the lighting I need to do wedding photography, as well as other indoor photography,  We do have that empty bedroom in the basement now, so maybe I could make that into some kind of studio for the 'other kinds of indoor photography'.  I don't know.  The ceilings might be too low.  But, I'm one step closer to making the plunge. Please be praying for clarity for me as I pursue this.

This week I began cooking all of our meals as gluten free.  None of us have Celiac issues, but Todd is diabetic and we have noticed that when he has gluten his sugar levels are higher.  I figured not having the 'bad stuff' around at all would make it easier for him to eat right.  That, plus holding each other accountable because if I'm working this hard to learn this new stuff, we'd better be sticking with it!  I've been researching gluten-free cooking since November and this week we started.  It's been a lot easier than I figured it would be.  (That's probably because of all the research, which is what I needed.  I'm a planner, ya know!) My goal is to still make home-stylish meals, even though they are healthy meals. I'm a firm believer that food should be tasty and pretty. We're not cutting out all starches, just wheat. (Thus the 'gluten-free'.)  Less processed and more fresh.  I've been posting my recipes with pics on Facebook and have had lots of positive responses.  There are lots of people who have to eat gluten-free for many different reasons.

This is random, but did you know that when typing on a computer keyboard, you are only supposed to use one space after a period, rather than two spaces as we did back in the 'olden days'??  I must admit, that's very difficult for me!  Why the change, I wonder?

Here are some random shots from this past week and weekend...

Kylie and I built a snowman. He has a celery nose because I used all of the carrots in our stew!  Oops!  Sorry Frosty!
This was a picture Monique took of me to use with my new blog for the library.  It's about reading the Little House on the Prairie books.  I'm starting the series for my 37th year in a row!
Rue peeking at me as I was reading.  "Can I join you, Mommy??"
We used gift cards from Maralyn and Nabil to enjoy a meal at Olive Garden!  And, yes, we ate gluten free!
Kylie and Morgan, as we went to have lunch at Todd's work a week ago Friday.  I'm thinking of doing our family photos for our Christmas card here on these stairs next year, so I was checking the lighting!
Gotta scoot for now.  Hope you have had a great weekend!

Pics from New Years' Day at My Mom's

Here are pictures from last Tuesday when we met to celebrate Christmas on New Years' Day at my mom and step-dad's house. We had such a nice time! It had snowed the day before, so I was a bit worried that we would have to cancel, but the roads were clear by New Year's Day, so everything worked out great!
